Generation “us”

first_img ShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr This year, let’s celebrate where we’re alike as well as where we’re different.  by: Aaron PughPuzzled by Gen Y? I think I finally understand the sentiment. See there’s this new crowd on deck — Generation Z — that’s about to enter the world and the workforce in some very meaningful ways over the next few years.According to some, this generation will build on many of the strengths my generation often claims to posses, but will also be absent many of our naivetés and shortcomings. After all, these individuals have lived almost all of their lives in a period of recession, war, and other struggles, compared to Gen Y’s relatively prosperous upbringing in the 80’s and 90’s. Personally, I believe that hard times typically build the hardiest people, which bodes well for Gen Z’s ultimate potential. As Gen Y begins having kids of their own, there’s also the lingering question mark of the impending Generation Alpha, a group whose story has only just started to be written. Those VHS movies I loved watching while growing up? Well, they might as well be phonographs or cave drawings to these kids. Even DVDs will be an entirely foreign concept for a generation raised on streaming media and other modern technology advances. In the business world, such demographic shakeups are both exciting and confusing, necessitating frequent analysis and interpretation in order to stay ahead of market demands. In support of those efforts, I’ve selected several of my favorite CreditUnions.com articles on attracting, serving, and even employing Gen Y individuals.8. 3 Ways To Put Millennials Behind The WheelThis group will soon exceed Gen X in auto-buying activity. But for credit unions, getting a piece of that action will require using alternative indicators of character outside of credit score, as well as offering additional benefits such as rate discounts and built-in educational resources. continue reading »last_img read more

LINA Boss Blames Ellen’s Unpopularity for Son, Gbehzohngar’s Defeat

first_imgThe Director General of the Liberia News Agency (LINA), Mr. Jay Nagbe Sloh, has revealed that “the unpopularity and the dislike” of President Ellen Johnson-Sirelaf led to the eventual defeat of her son, Robert Sirleaf who, according to Sloh, should have been the best person to serve the people in the Senate from Montserrado County.Mr. Sloh, a former political propagandist of the ruling Unity Party (UP), also said the out-of-favor (dislike) of the President is to blame for the defeat in the Grand Bassa capital Buchanan on Friday of President Pro Tempore Gbehzohngar Findley.“If the President had not gone to Grand Bassa County to campaign for Senator Findley, he would have won,” Mr. Sloh said. The tough-talking political commentator and LINA boss made the damning remarks yesterday on a radio talk show.LINA is a government news outlet, housed in the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism. Its aim is to carry government messages, policies, plans, and programs to the Liberian people, including those in the remotest areas of the country, as well as report/collect news from the counties.Mr. Sloh argued that two defeated candidates proved to their respective counties of being the best candidates to represent their own people, but their alignment with the President caused their defeats.Though he failed to outline what caused the unpopularity of the President, who has ruled the country since 2005, some political pundits argue that   “corruption and the untimely leasing of the oil blocks” increased the hatred of the Liberian people.Additionally, an official of the Friends of Zoe Emmanuel Pennoh, who begged anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the media, told our reporter that the primary reason Rep. Pennoh’s lost in Grand Gedeh County was the endorsement of his candidacy by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and the Unity Party. The UP publicly supported the candidacy of Rep. Zoe E. Pennoh and did not field a candidate in Grand Gedeh. The spokesman said majority of the people in the county have the perception that the support of Rep. Pennoh by the President meant that he (Rep. Pennoh) is in support of the government incarcerating their kinsmen without fair trial. It may be recalled that some Grand Gededians and others are in jail for allegedly being  accomplices in the Ivorian Civil War, in which armed supporters of former President Laurent Gbagbo, believed to have lost the 2008 election to Alhassan Ouattara, were trying to overthrow latter. Mr. Sloh and officials of the Friends of Zoe Pennoh’s allegations stemmed from provisional results of the Saturday senatorial poll. In the provisional tally, Amb. George Weah of the Congress Democratic Change (CDC) is said to have overwhelmingly defeated independent candidate Robert Sirleaf, the President’s son, who was also contesting for the Montserrado Senate seat. Also, another CDC candidate, Marshall Dennis, is poised to win Grand Gedeh, ahead of UP- endorsed candidate Rep. Pennoh. Moreover, in Grand Bassa County, Liberty Party’s Jonathan Kaipay is ahead of Gbehzongar Milton Findley, who is currently President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate. When contacted, Presidential Press Secretary Jerolinmek M. Piah told the Daily Observer that even though he hadn’t listened to Mr. Sloh on the radio, however, he counter argued that those candidates have not lost the senatorial race because the President supported them.“The President has endorsed all Unity Party candidates in the race. Some of them, including Mr. Morris Saytumah in Bomi, J. Milton Teahjay in Sinoe and Conmany Wesseh in River Gee, are winning their race. Why they are not losing because the President is supporting them, too?” he asked.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Geocaching Travel Bug Puzzle

We want to share these moments of discovery with the world.Think of the great explorers. Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition around the world began with more than 200 men. Columbus had three ships full of fellow explorers. So it’s no stretch that modern day geocaching explorers want others to join the adventure.Let me introduce you to Brenda Shirey, aka Sequoia_2. The Louisiana resident started geocaching in 2005. She wanted to share the adventure and camaraderie of geocaching. Her idea? It’s a Trackable geocaching puzzle (TB1CNE2 “Geocacher’s Puzzle”). The puzzle consists of custom-made puzzle pieces from geocachers around the globe. Pieces have arrived from Japan, the U.K. and throughout North America.Brenda says, “The puzzle idea came along after I was buying school supplies at a teacher supply store.  They had these large blank puzzles you could buy called ‘Community Puzzle.’  I really didn’t know what I was going to do with them.  One day I sat there doodling around and started decorating one with my geocaching name and some stickers.”Brenda Shirey aka Sequoia_2 Soon Brenda says, “I showed it to someone and they liked it and said they wanted to do one.  Thinking this would make a good Travel Bug, I assigned a number to it from one of my Travel Bugs I had and started giving out puzzle pieces to people who were interested.” That was in March of 2007.The idea spread quickly beyond her local geocaching community: “The puzzle goes to events as a Travel Bug where I set it up and people can discover it.  I will also bring blank pieces with me with my mailing address on the back for those interested in making one. Everyone who sees the puzzle really likes it and enjoys looking at all the pieces.  When I first started, most of my pieces were from local cachers, but as the puzzle traveled to events, other cachers took notice. ”Brenda says, “My first piece from out of the USA came from Japan!  I now have pieces from all over the world.  They range from the very simple to some who have put a lot of work into them.  Some cachers will tell me they can’t make one, they are not artistic.  You don’t have to be artistic, as long as your geocaching name is in the design, it can be anything at all!”And Brenda says that anyone can make their own puzzle: “I had someone express interest in starting one themselves and I told them to expect to spend a lot of time and money on it.  Puzzle pieces, envelopes and postage add up after a while and it can be expensive, but it is worth it to me just to see it grow larger and to see how people decorate their piece.  Someday, my ultimate goal is to get it to about 500 – 1000 pieces and then donate it to Groundspeak to go in their office, maybe even mounted on the wall piece by piece.  Now that would be some awesome wall art!”Yes, it would. Thank you Brenda!Pieces made by Brenda, her husband and their daughterShare with your Friends:Morelast_img read more

Machine-based tools are fine for simple greetings and pleasantries. However, only human translators can help us understand the political and cultural nuances inherent in foreign texts. This is important on two accounts. Firstly, rather than bouncing ideas off a culturally insular echo-chamber, we have a chance to learn from others with distinctly different view points. And secondly, for the first time ever, world history moves from being a confined regional fact to an evolving and diverse discussion. Human translation lets us address collective global issues while also seeing the negative and positive impact of our choices. For this reason a number of groups have come forward to produce open translation (or crowd sourced translation) projects. Here are just a few of those efforts:1. Project Lingua: This service aims to reduce language barriers on the web. With Project Lingua, volunteers translate alternative media sources from citizen journalists on the Global Voices network. 2. Worldwide Lexicon: This project first parses information with machine translators and real humans review the translations to ensure they are accurate. From here, the group republishes the sites in a number of languages in order to encourage cross-cultural dialogue. The group also built Der Mundo – what WWL describes as a “general purpose translation community for blog and RSS feeds.” A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

There have been many complaints about Oxite, from the development process, to the scope of the project, to the quality of the code and the way Microsoft explained the concept/product.
