Military Continues To Support Recovery In Haiti

first_imgBy Dialogo April 08, 2010 The deputy commander of the military task force set up after a devastating Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti said the U.S. military will continue to support the work of Haiti´s government and international agencies after the task force is deactivated at the end of May.

Maj. Gen. Simeon G. Trombitas, deputy commanding general of Joint Task Force Haiti, noted during a DoDLive Bloggers Roundtable yesterday that the mission in Haiti is out of the usual military lane.

“In a traditional military mission, we can designate the enemy and do those things easily,” he said. “Here, really, the adversaries are the forces of nature and time.”

Another difference, Trombitas explained, is that instead of commanding and controlling the mission, the U.S. military has played a support role, “coordinating and collaborating” with lead agencies such as the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.N. Stabilization Mission in Haiti, which provided security.

Trombitas said he is impressed by how well combat skills have transferred to the relief mission. He observed that servicemembers´ experiences working with civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq have paid off in Haiti.

The general recalled that the Haiti mission started with work to bring “order from chaos” at the airport. He added that the Seabees performed “a Herculean effort in fixing the main pier [and] the south pier, with some underwater engineering there, bolstering the pylons that the pier stands on.”
Current efforts are focused on preparing for the coming rainy season by relocating some of the 1.3 million displaced people from camps that are at risk for flooding, Trombitas said. He described the greatest needs as shelter, settlement and sanitation.last_img read more

Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott does the ‘Dak Dance’ to celebrate touchdown vs. Lions

first_imgI’ve seen people having fun with the video of Dak Prescott warming-up, so I had to do it too by adding MC Hammer. 🤣🤣 pic.twitter.com/3daN5WNmZz— George Montes (@george_montes) November 11, 2019During Sunday’s Dallas-Detroit throwdown in Motown, Prescott’s running mate caught the fever, as well, following a touchdown vs. the Lions. Dak Dance fever has infected Ezekiel Elliott.Prior to last Sunday night’s game vs. the Vikings, NBC highlighted quarterback Dak Prescott’s interesting pregame routine, which includes what can best be described as a “hip thrust.” 🤣 @EzekielElliott broke out the @Dak Dance on this TD celebration pic.twitter.com/oTG3SdywSr— FOX Sports (@FOXSports) November 17, 2019The Cowboys would go on to win 35-27, with the Dance once again taking center stage. The Dak Dance (or Prescott Pirouette, if you prefer), took Twitter by storm — and the NFL soonafter. Earlier this week, 49ers players Jimmy Garoppolo and Nick Bosa were caught mimicking the Prescott Pirouette. This might be the best bromance the NFL has seen, while the dance is already better than the Floss, the Wu-Tang and the Electric Slide.last_img read more

US plans to enforce visa restrictions for pregnant women

first_imgThe Trump administration is planning to come out with new visa restrictions aimed at restricting “birth tourism,” in which women travel to the U.S. to give birth so their children can have legal status.Under the new rules it would make it more difficult for pregnant women to travel on a tourist visa. Women would have to convince a consular officer that they have another legitimate reason to come to the U.S.Consular officers would have to determine whether a visa applicant would be coming to the U.S. primarily to give birth.Reports say, birth tourism has been a ongoing for a long time now, and has even become a money-making business. There have been multiple arrests for operators of birth tourism agencies for visa fraud or tax evasion.Although coming to the U.S. to give birth is fundamentally legal, the draft rule is “intended to address the national security and law enforcement risks associated with birth tourism, including criminal activity associated with the birth tourism industry,” a State Department spokesperson said.last_img read more

Inside Conditions…Sibling rivalry between Bucs, Pens and Steelers?

first_imgIn the recent past I have often wondered about the Pittsburgh sports franchises’ value relative to each other. However I am a bit more fascinated than I thought I would be in regards to how these franchises fight for and share the “moneypie” in Pittsburgh as well as their percentage of the market regionally, nationally and globally.Talking about the ultimate inflation bump, the Pittsburgh Steelers were purchased by Art Rooney in 1933 for get this, $2,500.00. They are currently worth more than $1.1 approximately billion.  Their base revenue per fan is approximately $39.  When sports business pros and enthusiasts talk about an creating and maintaining an almost perfect template to run any business let alone a sports franchise, Pittsburgh should be the pattern from which the majority of garments should be tailored. The Rooney family began designing their garment of destiny in 1969 when they hired a young, teacher/coach and former offensive lineman Charles Henry Noll to weave the fabric from which they would craft future “suits of legend.Noll, whose pedigree is unquestioned because he studied and learned his craft from the legendary iconic coach Paul Brown who defined and re-sculpted the game that Americans and the world have grown to love. When Noll grabbed the reins of one of the most pitiful franchises in the history of professional sports, he not only had a vision of just winning but he also saw the need to create an in house player selection and development system that is emulated to this day by sports owners from across the globe. The marketability of the Pittsburgh Steelers transcends more than just football and sports enthusiasts but impacts the GDP and marketing strategy on an entire city and region.Take for example the CBS affiliate KDKA Television in Pittsburgh.Although Pittsburgh is the 23rd largest market it is the 14th largest television market largely because of the presence of the Steelers who represent one of four franchises of the NFL AFC North Division. The remaining three being the Baltimore Ravens, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cleveland Browns. The Browns are the only team in the division that has not participated in postseason play during the past three years. For all intents and purposes the AFC North may be the most brutal and physical division in all of professional football. With that sort of tenacity and imagery one does not have to wonder why the network and the affiliate that cover the AFC in general and the AFC North in particular consistently occupy such a strong market position. One may assume that if the Philadelphia Eagles were located in Pittsburgh with their sporadic record of reaching and winning championships the television market would they be in such an enviable position. Why? Because WPVI-TV ABC 6 in Philadelphia, the nation’s fourth largest market, is ranked 22nd in market share. The bucks don’t stop with the Steelers, the money begins to flow with the men from the steel city.Let’s move on to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In 1999 the team was purchased by former Penguin and NHL superstar Mario Lemieux for $109 million dollars. Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney holding Super Bowl XLIII Trophy.
