DSC graduating class of 2011Minister of Education Petter Saint Jean has admonished the graduating class of 2011 to go bravely into the world to places which even their parents dared not go.The minister said, “the government led by Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit Prime Minister of Dominica wants you to go bravely into the world; go where your parents dared not even dream of that is why your government and in particular the ministry of education and human resource development work so hard”.According to Mr Saint Jean the students should “break free from the prison of imposed limitations” and use their “skills to open the shackles and through off the chains that would imprison your mind”.Mr Saint Jean further stated that the associate’s degree which they students have obtained is “a passport that gives you entry into a world that is growing flatter and smaller where boundaries are being smashed day in and day out through technology and progressive, public policy”.In related news; President of the Dominica State College Dr. Donald C Peters admonished the graduating class to shift the work paradigm to build the nation.“The most welcoming change to our national character that would benefit our economy and our country would be a new approach to work…You can be the new workers with a new approach to work and work ethics that shift the paradigm to production.” Professor Laura Serrant-GreenMeantime, Professor Laura Serrant-Green who hails from St. Joseph holds a PhD in Nursing, Masters of Arts in Women Studies and Bachelors of Arts and Nursing noted to the graduates that education although a personal achievement marks continuing development of their families and communities.“Education is often seen as a personal achievement, one to be completed hopefully willingly as we pass from the next phase of our lives. However, the education that you have completed and the successes we celebrate today mark the sheer continuing development of your family and your community”.Professor Serrant-Green urged the students in the words of her mother who told her in creole to walk with her head held high like a person without shame.“This is my message to you; if you walk like a person without shame you with your head held high, pride in yourself, your family, your community and your country. Graduates of 2011, I congratulate you the future is yours and the future of Dominica is in your hands,” she said.She further noted that one’s education, achievement and experiences are their best allies and that what is learnt cannot be unlearnt.Valedictorian Sidney JulesValedictorian Sidney Jules who copped the awards for Economics, Physics and Information Technology which he shared with Kimberly Lawrence, also encouraged his fellow graduates to be proactive, persistent and persevering as he says this will prepare them to grasp opportunities which may arise.He further advised them to change their mindset if they have not yet done so as this is essential to their development.“Fellow graduates, if it has not yet been incorporated into your life as yet, I urge you now, to change your mindset from one based on reliance, procrastination, or irresponsibility, to the mind characteristic of an industrious and self-motivated individual, enthusiastic about every task you are faced with.”Two hundred and seventy-six students graduated yesterday– 184 from the Faculty of Arts and Sciences;– 21 from the Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology;– 0 from the Faculty of Education; and– 1 from the Faculty of Health Sciences.Here are a few photographs of the students receiving their special awards: [nggallery id=84]Thirty-six awards were awarded to deserving graduates in the following categories:•Special Awards (28);•Extra Special Awards (3);•Faculty Awards (4);•Sports Personality of the Year (1); and•Club of the Year.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img
