Riyad Mahrez would be ideal Ozil replacement, says ex-Arsenal midfielder Robson

first_imgFormer Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson has urged Arsene Wenger to improve his squad citing Riyad Mahrez as a perfect replacement should Mesut Ozil decide to leave. The Leicester City winger announced his intention to leave the Foxes in a statement on Tuesday and was crowned PFA player of the year after helping the side to their fairy tale Premier League title.  Long-serving Gunners boss Wenger is believed to have signed a contract to continue as boss for another two years and Robson believes superstar talent will be needed if current gems Ozil and Alexis Sanchez decide to leave North London.“We now know that Sanchez and Ozil may not stay so, if those two go, then he’s got to get in two very good players.” Robson told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.“Mahrez would be the ideal replacement for Ozil and he needs another very good signing.“But they need top quality players so that the crowd believe that Arsenal are going to be challenging for titles and the other teams are going to think that Arsenal are going to be challenging for titles.”Despite a late upturn in form, Arsenal missed out on a Champions League place but did overcome Chelsea to claim their third FA Cup in four years. Many believe the improved form of Granit Xhaka, as well as switching to a back three, as one of the reasons behind the Gunners improved play. However, despite signs the Swiss international midfielder is starting to come good, following his summer transfer, Robson remains unconvinced that he can establish himself as a top holding midfielder.  “It [recruitment] has certainly got to be better. Xhaka is always going to lack athleticism to be a really good holding midfield player.“If you are only playing with one holding midfielder that’s where you have got a problem and the reason he’s been booked so many times, and sent off, is not because he’s a dirty player but because he lacks athleticism.“That’s why [Lee] Cattermole at Sunderland is always being booked and sent off because he can’t run.”last_img
