After all, hospitality is our middle name,” said RCR founder Robert Risley. Halifax 2014 plans to make a number of additional partnership announcements in the coming weeks. “We are currently in negotiation with numerous companies based here in Halifax and across the country,” said Mr. MacGillivray. “The support that we are garnering from coast to coast demonstrates that this is truly Canada’s bid, and we are proud to represent the entire nation.” The Commonwealth Games is an international sport and cultural event held every four years in which athletes from 71 Commonwealth nations and territories compete. In December 2005, Halifax won the right to be Canada’s candidate city for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Anil Kapoor amused by his FaceApp memes

first_imgMumbai: FaceApp is a craze among Bollywood celebrities and fans alike, with everyone trying out the app to morph their mugshots into an older look. Interestingly Anil Kapoor, who never seems to age in real life, has garnered a lot of memes on his appearance, and the 62-year-old star is “amused” by the creativity apparent in such memes. “I’m so amused and entertained by people’s creativity! Just when I think they would’ve run out of memes to make about me, they surprise me with yet another hilarious take! It’s quite flattering and humbling honestly. I’m happy that I’m able to entertain and maybe even inspire people of all ages, even when I’m not trying!” Anil reacted. Once he put out his version of FaceApp, one of the users wrote: “One cannot look 30 years old at the age of 63, unless it’s Anil Kapoor.” Another user said: “Anil Kapoor looks younger than young Anil Kapoor.”last_img read more

Privateclinic trial resumes as BC aims to take action against doctors

first_imgVANCOUVER – Excruciating pain had Tamara Parrales heading to the emergency department multiple times for nearly a year, and when a specialist brought up the possibility of ovarian cancer, she wasn’t prepared to wait several months for an MRI in the public system.Parrales, 36, made the decision to pay $1,100 to have the diagnostic test in a private clinic last fall and finally had surgery in March.“If they say you might have cancer and then you have to wait four to six months to find out if you do, that should be urgent enough that they should get you in as soon as possible,” she said, adding the MRI showed she had endometriosis.“It was almost a year before I had surgery and the reason for that is the surgeon has only one day a month of operating time,” Parrales said.Starting in October, British Columbia doctors who charge patients for medically necessary procedures will face initial fines of $10,000 as the province enforces a law that hadn’t been fully enacted for 15 years. The stance against doctors illegally billing patients for private health care already covered by the public system coincides with the resumption of a B.C. Supreme Court battle by a surgeon who argues for a patients’ constitutional right to speedier treatment. The case launched by Dr. Brian Day is set to resume on Monday, and he said he may consider applying for an injunction against the law on private health announced last week by Health Minister Adrian Dix.Day said his Cambie Surgery Centre, along with the province’s 56 private surgical facilities and 17 others that provide MRIs, helps keep waiting lists down in the public system. He said private clinics may be forced to close when the law goes into effect, allowing the province to investigate so-called extra billing practices and penalize physicians who don’t reimburse patients like Parrales.“The government is in court denying that wait lists are a problem and denying there’s any harm from wait lists,” he said.Quoting statistics from the B.C. College of Physicians and Surgeons that show 60,000 to 70,000 patients a year go to private clinics, Day asks if they are transferred into public health care, “how does that help the system?”Private clinics are not illegal, though billing for medically necessary care is a violation of the Canada Health Act.Health authorities regularly contract out to private facilities for eye surgeries and other procedures that are paid for by public money, a practice that Dix said will continue.Dr. Trina Larsen Soles, president of Doctors of BC, said the medical association for the province’s physicians supports patients having access to care regardless of their ability to pay.“I understand the imperative of physicians who are struggling with not being able to provide the care that they want to because of limited operating-room capacity,” she said, adding she’s hoping the government will deliver on recent commitments to increase the number of hip and knee replacements through measures including more efficient use of operating rooms. The province also aims to do 37,000 more MRIs by March 2019.Larsen Soles said private facilities may play a role in reducing wait lists in the public system.“If indeed the government wants to address the waiting lists they’re going to have to utilize every bit of capacity they can, both public and private. So we are encouraged by the fact that they are going to wait until October and they’re open to negotiating with the owners and operators with these private facilities to look at what the transition might look like and how they can use them going forward to provide access to patients,” she said.“If they cause the private facilities to go under without any backup plan then they’ve done a disservice to the patients.”Christine Sorensen, acting president of the B.C. Nurses Union, said nurses will be outside B.C. Supreme Court on Monday at a rally, organized by the Council of Canadians, before the resumption of the trial, where the BC Health Coalition and Canadian Doctors for Medicare are interveners.“My nursing colleagues across Canada, their nursing unions, strongly endorse universal public health care, strongly endorse medicare, and believe that private clinics are not the solution for patients across Canada. Far from being what people would call a relief valve, we believe that they’re a drain on the public health-care system.”— Follow @CamilleBains1 on Twitter.Note to readers: This is a corrected story. A previous version misattributed a quotation about the government denying in court that wait lists are a problem to Health Minister Adrian Dix.last_img read more

Five die in Kosovo prison fire 17 injured – UN official

One prison officer was also hospitalized for smoke inhalation suffered in an effort to help prisoners attempting to flee the burning building in Dubrava Prison last night, the Director of the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) Department of Justice, Paul Coffey, told a news conference.“Someone inside threw a burning mattress at the guards,” Mr. Coffey said of the fire in the prison’s block 2, which held 174 serious offenders, some of them for homicide. “Prisoners then set other mattresses on fire, which caused the fire to burn quickly beyond their control. The subsequent flames and smoke reached the 2nd floor.”An international judge has been appointed to conduct an investigation, he added. The police commissioner has already secured the facility for this purpose and will work directly with the investigative judge. The Kosovo Penal Management Division (PMD) will not investigate itself. Ohio State track teams fine tuning in Buckeye Tuneup

It has been a while since the Ohio State track teams burnt rubber at home. The men’s and women’s squads are scheduled to compete for the first time in Columbus since the Buckeye Classic Jan. 10 this weekend, when they host the Buckeye Tune-up meet. The meet is to include track teams from all around the state of Ohio. Some members of the teams said they see this weekend as an opportunity to further tweak races before the Big Ten Indoor Championships, slated for Feb. 28 through March 1 in Geneva, Ohio.Men’s track coach Ed Beathea and women’s coach Karen Dennis said they will be holding some runners from competition this weekend to give them the rest and rehabilitation they need.“We’re into our taper down,” Beathea said. “This time of the year, seven or eight days out from the conference it is fine tuning. Much more specific type of work, resting guys that have aches and pains, just trying to get that stuff taken care of before next week.”Dennis said the coaches are being extra cautious with the amount of work they are giving the runners because they don’t want to overload the athletes in hopes of keeping them fresh for the more important meet the following weekend.“Right now we are doing more rehabilitating than competing, as well as resting more so than we are competing,” Dennis said. “Our bodies have taken a bit of a beating throughout the season, as all teams have. So right now it is important to under train.”However, many athletes are still set to compete this weekend from both teams. Some are even looking to secure a spot on the bus for the Big Ten Championship. The younger and more inexperienced athletes will be racing this weekend to give them another week of exposure to the competitive environment, Dennis said.“We’re going to use this weekend to critique our performances and strategize how to better put our team together for point performance next week,” Dennis said.Among those competing this weekend for the men’s team is sophomore thrower Joseph Velez, who said he is glad to have one more weekend meet to build confidence.“I’m excited for the tune-up,” Velez said. “I had a slow start to the season, but I am starting to pick up and will just carry this momentum into Big Ten (Championships).”Throwing events at the Buckeye Tune-up are set to begin at 4 p.m., with track events are set to begin at 5 p.m. read more

However great debt was created and it seems it has not been settled yet. Brazil was also the headquarters of the Pan-American games four years ago, and now has zero representatives in it, only referees. The 5 Takeaways from the Coyotes introduction of

first_img The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact Let’s be real. McCoy beat the Steelers in the playoffs with Tim Tebow. That doesn’t happen by accident. But is he the right fit for Rosen, Johnson and the future Cardinals? That decision is more important than anything that happens on Thursday, even with the inflammatory words of Miller. The Cardinals should already know the answer. If they don’t, the problem is far worse than we thought. Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling Why?Related LinksBroncos’ Von Miller on Cardinals: ‘We’re going to kick their [expletive]’Under fire, Cardinals OC Mike McCoy sees just another game vs. BroncosMaybe it’s a sign of desperation in Denver, where the Broncos have lost four consecutive games; allowed 593 rushing yards in the past two weeks; and recently became the first team in history to allow successive running backs to gain 200 or more yards in a single game.Denver is obsessed with football. One of their sports radio stations switched to an all-Broncos format in 2017, shutting out an entertaining baseball franchise that has made the playoffs the past two seasons. Their fan base has three Super Bowl victories and eight overall appearances. They haven’t witnessed consecutive losing seasons since 1972. They don’t always think clearly at high altitude. They also had over 9,000 no-shows during last week’s home loss against the Rams. Their head coach is under more pressure than our offensive coordinator, and anger is turning to apathy. That could explain Miller’s inexplicable outburst.Or maybe he’s just like us, wholly unimpressed with the Cardinals’ offense. And maybe he carries no fear that Denver’s former offensive coordinator, Mike McCoy, can change the narrative Thursday night at State Farm Stadium. The Cardinals face a stiff challenge in Week 7. Their offensive line is wounded. Their belief is waning. They have corrected none of the problems that have persisted following a Week 1 loss to the Redskins. They fit the archetype of teams that get usually blown out on a short week of preparation, with the notable exception of playing at home. 74 Comments   Share   Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retirescenter_img But will it even feel like a home game?Head coach Steve Wilks conceded that all jobs are in jeopardy if his team doesn’t win, an abrupt departure from his previous support of McCoy. Contrast his shifting mindset to Bruce Arians, who never wavered in defense of Amos Jones, despite all evidence to the contrary. That’s because the former head coach never worried about getting fired. His stubborn conviction was the bedrock of stability.McCoy could be subjected to one of the NFL’s cruelest twists, fired midseason in successive years, with just one victory in his past 12 games. Or maybe he saves his job by getting out of David Johnson’s head, allowing the former MVP candidate to launch his season against a malleable Denver defense. Or stops running Neanderthal plays up the back of a rookie center. Or empowers Josh Rosen to shoulder some of the intellectual load, making quick decisions and throwing the ball downfield. But what kind of strategy is that?By now, the Cardinals should know exactly what they have in McCoy, for better and worse. They also have a rookie quarterback with all the skills and charisma to carry a franchise for the next decade. They have a running back who once wrecked the NFL, receiving a $39 million contract on the eve of the 2018 season, nearly $32 million guaranteed. Top Stories They must have the right teacher and vision in place. Anything less would be lunacy. The Cardinals also know a lot more about Wilks, and his role in an offense built to succeed in the 1970s. The modern game features dynamic schemes that spin the ball downfield, capitalizing on rules designed to marginalize defenders, built to target and exploit individual mismatches. That’s not what we’re watching in Arizona, and nothing will shake your faith like the absurd preponderance of unsuccessful running plays up the gut, into blitzing defenders, a team on the road to nowhere. If this is a McCoy problem, Thursday’s game is essentially meaningless. His job is too important to be lost on a single outcome. The Cardinals must find the right mentor for Rosen, reversing the course of history as soon as possible. The situation is surely more nuanced and complicated. McCoy might’ve been instructed to build an offense steeped in fear, based on an offensive line that Wilks overestimated, designed to nurse a fragile veteran quarterback through a 16-game season. It felt like Wilks soared in status following Steve Keim’s suspension, discovering and wielding influence he did not deserve, power that McCoy innately understood as a former head coach. And when Sam Bradford failed to produce, acting like a quarterback waiting to be replaced, it changed the dynamics for everyone. Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, right, explains a play to rookie quarterback Josh Rosen (3) during NFL football practice Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018, in Glendale, Ariz. (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin) Jobs are on the line. So is dignity, pride and the reputation of our grounded NFL franchise.Von Miller made sure of that.“I wouldn’t say it’s a must-win, we’re going to kick their [expletive], though,” the Broncos star told the Denver media on Tuesday. “Make sure you put that up there. We’re going to kick their [expletive]. They’re going to get our best this week.”Miller’s classic playground taunt needlessly raised the volume of Thursday night’s Pink Slip Bowl. Bombay A recent report by a committee set up by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has criticised Kumar a professor in the electrical engineering department of IIT Bombay for blowing out of proportion the effects of cell phone tower radiation on humans and on the other hand promoting his daughter’s business of products claiming to reduce the impact of such radiation Kumar one of the 13 members of the committee said he had send repeated emails to the panel pointing out that several members were pro-DoT norms “…out of 13 members eight are known to favour DOT norms (high radiation)
