Only APNU mathematicians would find this action sensible

first_imgDear Editor,Winston Jordan’s signature as ‘Minister of Finance’ has been worthless on any non-routine document since December 21, 2018. Jordan’s latest (public) flourish of the pen has been to sign an MoU with Bank of Guyana (BoG) Governor, Gobind Ganga, for the management of an account (yet to be approved) in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. This three-card trick needs explaining for the uninitiated.Winston Jordan said the Fed Reserve “it is the safest places to keep the money” as if the BoG has had a robbery in its history. BoG foreign currency reserves are always held in Fed reserve accounts, this is nothing new. The BoG has never been robbed in the traditional sense; however, Jordan has orchestrated the biggest squandermania of money and resources in Guyana’s history. The populace has been taxed to breaking point with over $300 billion collected by GRA per annum since 2015; Guyana’s USD reserves were 968 million in 2015. All the collected revenue has been spent; the reserves have been depleted to the point where they can only cover the massive overdraft of $73.1 billion as of November 2019. Brigadier Granger and his Lieutenant Jordan have bankrupted Guyana. Guyana has nothing to show for this massive depletion of revenue. No hydroelectric plant, no bridge over rivers, no new hotels. All of the reserves now expended were kept in accounts at the same Federal Reserve Bank of New York, that money was not safe, what makes this money any different? The Granger Administration highlighting of the Natural Resource Fund is nothing short of a gimmicky distraction from the present disastrous state of the economy. Granger said he “inherited a bad hand”, I would suggest that the work required to get back to where Guyana has US$1 billion in reserves is going to take longer than expected, for with oil revenues come great expectations from the populace. All the infrastructure projects that were abandoned or sabotaged by APNU/AFC will have to be fast-tracked for the benefit of the people. After four and a half years, David Patterson now recognises that there is a shortfall in power generation; his plan? Add 47 MW via new generating sets; why not a barge? The unsavoury truth is that a sovereign wealth fund is nothing short of idiotic at this point; we would be investing our oil revenues in America and earning 1 per cent while borrowing far larger sums at 4 per cent. Only APNU mathematicians would find this course of action sensible. A fund will become relevant after we have returned our economy to stability and prosperity and in the meanwhile, wherever we put this money, Jordan will find a way to spend it. We need to be truthful with the population. Guyanese know that the economy is in dire straits; they can feel it in their pockets; What hope can the ordinary Guyanese feel when the oligarchs in our midst are reduced to hoping for scraps from the oil table. APNU/AFC has failed the businesses and workers of Guyana in equal measure. We are all second-class citizens in our own country; we have achieved Granger’s much-vaunted ‘social cohesion’.Elections on March 2 are the first of many steps on the road to recovery and prosperity; Guyanese must ensure a message of rejection of the squandermania is sent loud enough to echo for generations. Vote to put an end to APNU/AFC; the most expensive Government in our history whose members are only interested in power, perks and personal gain above all else. There are many hard yards ahead of us as a nation before the damage done by Granger and his personality cult can be repaired, but the time and tide of history are with us.Respectfully,Robin Singhlast_img read more

Hydro making progress after snow storm

first_img– Advertisement -Got a photo of the snow storm in your area?  Email contact@energeticcity-beta.mystagingwebsite.com By Adam ReaburnCrews are working over time to get power restored to over 3,000 customers in the Peace Region. The hardest hit area remains the South Peace and the Progress and Groundbirch regions.  Over 2,300 customers are without power and Hydro hopes to restore power to about 800 of those affected by midnight tonight.  That would leave another 1,500 which they hope to get to Sunday and Monday. In the North Peace about 700 customers, mainly in the Cecil Lake area, are without power and Hydro hopes to bring that number down to 200 or 300 by midnight tonight.  Again the remainder would see power restored by Sunday or Monday.Advertisement A motor vehicle incident also knocked out power in the Moberly area, that outage should be fully restored by 7pm.BC Hydro’s Dan Von Hollen says the biggest problem they have today is the shear number of outages.  At one point there was over 100 separate power outages in the Peace region, which has stretched BC Hydro’s resources.  Crews are flying in from Vancouver and driving in from Kelowna, but won’t be able to help until Sunday.Hydro also has three crews of arborists who will be working ahead of the main line crews.  There job will be to clear trees, which traditionally line crews have done, so this will help to speed up the process. At the height of the power outages over 7,000 customers across the Peace region were without power.  Some lost power at around 6pm Friday night and may not see power restored until at least Sunday or maybe even Monday.Advertisementcenter_img For a current list of outages, click here.  For more updates you can listen to 100.1 Moose FM or keep checking Energeticcity.ca If you have photos or information you’d like to share about the snow storm, email contact@energeticcity-beta.mystagingwebsite.comlast_img read more

DONEGAL SCHOOL ATTEMPT TO SHUFFLE THEIR WAY INTO THE WORLD RECORD BOOKS

first_imgAlmost 800 pupils from a Donegal secondary school are to undertake a World Record attempt – for shuffling!Staff and pupils from the Loreto Community School in Milford will undertake the challenge at the end of this month in their school gymnasium. The pupils and staff have been undergoing a coordinated training regime under the watchful eye of dancers from Dynamic Waves dance group. On the day it is hoped the pupils of the school will ‘shuffle’ at least a minute to break the record. The shuffle is a new dance-step which is sweeping the planet! The Guinness Book of World Records usually request a member of their staff to be there to verify a world record. But on this occasion, Guinness World Record bosses say they are happy to have two members of the Gardai as independent judges. Members of the student council along with teacher Nathania McDonnell came up with the madcap plan for the ‘shuffle.’Ms McDonnell said “The Guinness Book of Records people told us we need at least 250 people shuffling but we’re going to go much bigger than that.“It’s going to be a great bit of fun but we have a bit of planning to do yet to make sure up to 800 people are all shuffling at the same time.“Most of the pupils are naturally shufflers but I think the people from Dynamic Waves are going to have their work cut out for them with some of the teachers,” she laughed. There is even a rumour that principal Andrew Kelly is going to attempt to ‘shuffle.’ DONEGAL SCHOOL ATTEMPT TO SHUFFLE THEIR WAY INTO THE WORLD RECORD BOOKS was last modified: March 1st, 2012 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Loreto Community SchoolNathania McDonnellshufflelast_img read more

Churches find contemporary music to be the great uniter

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREOregon Ducks football players get stuck on Disney ride during Rose Bowl eventChristian Copyright Licensing International Inc., the world’s largest provider of Christian music licensing, makes it possible for churches to legally copy and distribute praise-and-worship music to their congregations. Based in Portland, Ore., CCLI works with about 200,000 churches around the world and tracks the most popular songs used. Churches can’t legally project the lyrics on a video screen or reprint them without permission. But instead of negotiating with music publishers individually, churches can pay a blanket license fee to CCLI, which funnels royalties to the songwriters. In the past decade, the group has nearly doubled the number of U.S. churches it licenses to 140,000, said EMI CMG Publishing President Eddie DeGarmo, who’s on the licensing company’s advisory council. “This growth reflects the acceptance of the songs,” DeGarmo said. “Modern worship songs are exploding on a global basis. They’re in a style that relates to a younger audience. They’re easy to sing and sound like something you’d hear on the radio.” Many Protestant churches began to phase out hymnals and put song lyrics on overhead projection screens in the 1980s. Old-fashioned music was replaced by pop-influenced singalongs known as praise-and-worship music. FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Sunday mornings at the People’s Church look more like rock concerts than traditional worship services. A couple on stage leads about 3,700 people – many of them teenagers in blue jeans – in contemporary worship songs, accompanied by guitars and drums. Lyrics roll across a large video screen. “Music is a big deal in our church,” said Randy Elrod, creative-arts pastor for the church. “We have a band. We’re very contemporary in style. I’m influenced more by what is culturally relevant.” Thousands of churches like this one in suburban Nashville have moved away from singing hymns to “participatory music” – and that’s meant a change in music publishing, too. But “there was really no way for the songwriters to be paid for their works,” DeGarmo said. “So there was a need that arose to help churches work within the copyright law. (The licensing company) was formed as a way for them to operate legally.” Praise-and-worship songs are “congregational, not necessarily performance-based, someone performing on stage,” he said. “In other words they’re participatory. Modern worship has really struck a nerve in that way. It’s still growing. The churches are the avenue for these artists to get played.” Founded in 1984, CCLI now makes upward of $20 million a year in revenue – the majority of which is a percentage of the licensing fees, which are determined based on the size of the church. Annual fees range from about $100 to $1,000. CCLI surveys which songs are being sung in churches and ranks the top tunes, creating what DeGarmo describes as a kind of Billboard for Christian music. One of the leaders in praise-and-worship music, Chris Tomlin, garnered the most nominations for this year’s Dove Awards, the gospel music industry’s equivalent of the Grammys. Tomlin, 33, said he believes his music is popular with listeners who want to communicate with God. “Music connects with the soul,” Tomlin said. “I think it’s the quickest art form to the soul. “What bigger music scene is there in the world than the church? It’s vital to the world and to culture.” James Byrd, assistant dean of the Vanderbilt University Divinity School, said the licensing group’s growth reflects the increasing importance music plays in church services. “When we talk about denominations today, they’re not the primary identity markers for people who are Christians,” Byrd said. “More and more Christians don’t think of themselves tied to a denomination. “I think music is one of the things contributing to this,” he said. The music is trans-denominational, something uniting these people. … There’s less to disagree with in the music than with sermons, where you can get into theological arguments.”160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. DOCTOR TELLS COURT HE PUT HIS TEETH INTO MILK TO SAVE THEM AFTER SAVAGE ATTACK

first_imgA young doctor came face-to-face with his attackers in a Donegal courtroom today – despite being thousands of miles away in Australia.Dr Koe Davidson gave evidence via videolink from Melbourne to Letterkenny District Court. The young medic gave evidence against two men accused of assaulting him outside a pub in the seaside village of Dunfanaghy on April 4th, 2010. Dr Davidson had his two front teeth punched out during the completely unprovoked attack. The court heard how Dr Davidson and another American doctor Daniel Weaver came out of McColgan’s bar and were waiting for a taxi.A man approached them who was urinating on the street. The young doctors tried to move away from the man but they were then attacked by an unknown person.Dr Davidson told the court that he sought help from security men at the bar but was ignored. The attack resulted in Dr Davidson being punched and having both his front teeth knocked out.The teeth were put in milk to be preserved and they were later reinserted into Dr Davidson’s mouth through surgery. However the court was told the teeth will only last another four years and he will have to have implants. Two men, Garvin Montgomery, 23, of Ballymore, Dunfanaghy and Patrick McFadden, 26, of Derryreel, Dunfanaghy, appeared before the court on various charges in relation to the attack.Montgomery later contacted Gardai and said he was disgusted at himself for his involvement in the incident.Judge Paul Kelly described the attack on the two young doctors as “disgusting” which did nothing to help the tourism industry. He said both men had tried their best to avoid a confrontation but they had been set upon.“The defendants initiated the violence on two tourists who were minding their business – this was an appalling invasion of their person by these two men,” he said.“This country depends greatly on the tourist industry and people come here and they are entitled to feel they are safe.“These visitors thought they were having a quiet night in Dunfanaghy and this happened – the injuries suffered were appalling,” he said.Judge Kelly sentenced McFadden to six months in prison for a Section 2 assault and fined him a total of €300.He also fined Montgomery a total of €1,306.35 for various assault charges and also urinating in public. Both men were also ordered to pay costs of €1,515 including $700 AUS for the cost of the videolink from Australia.AT HEARING © 2011 donegaldaily.com, all Rights ReservedThe copying, republication or redistribution of donegaldaily.com Content, including by framing or similar means, is expressly prohibited by law.Follow us on www.twitter.com/donegaldailyFollow us on www.facebook.com/donegaldailyDOCTOR TELLS COURT HE PUT HIS TEETH INTO MILK TO SAVE THEM AFTER SAVAGE ATTACK was last modified: November 17th, 2011 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Letterkenny District Courtvideolinklast_img read more
