USbased Indian couple scientist killed in California boat fire

first_imgLos Angles: A US-based Indian couple and an Indian-origin scientist were among those who died from smoke inhalation when they were trapped on a boat packed with scuba divers that caught fire and sank off the California coast, according to media reports. On Monday, a massive fire broke out on the 75-foot charter boat called ‘Conception’ when the passengers were sleeping below the deck. The fire engulfed the deck, killing 34 people, including one crew member. Indian-origin scientist Sunil Singh Sandhu, 46, was also there on a dive vessel that sank off Santa Barbara in California. Sandhu lived and worked in the US for more than two decades, took up scuba diving only recently, his family in Singapore was quoted as saying by Singapore-based The New Paper. Sandhu earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from the Stanford University and worked as a scientist at a Palo Alto research company. He was a newcomer to scuba diving, picking up the sport two months before his death. “I didn’t know that he was going for another trip,” his father, Soji Singh said. “I had been trying to persuade him to come back to Singapore.” The massive fire was reported to be one of California’s worst maritime disasters in decades.last_img read more

Keeping Canadas power on will require 20000 new workers by 2022

first_imgOTTAWA — Canada’s electricity providers say they need to appeal to a younger and more diverse workforce if they’re going to keep the country’s lights on.A new report on the industry’s labour needs from Electricity Human Resources Canada suggests at least 20,500 new workers will be needed in power plants and transmission systems before 2022.“It’s extremely critical,” said Michelle Branigan, the CEO of the organization formed 15 years ago to address workforce concerns in the sector.Almost 107,000 people are employed directly in the industry in Canada, from generation to power delivery. Currently the industry is not as diverse as Canada as whole, with women accounting for only one in four employees and visible minorities just over one in 10. It’s also older than average: Workers under age 25 account for fewer than one in 20 people. The demand for new workers is complicated by the fact many of the jobs require substantial training.“These people are not trained in like three months or six months and ready to hit the ground running,” said Branigan. Most of the new workers will be needed to replace the aging workforce, but the industry is also expanding as demand for power grows thanks to battery-powered electronics, electric cars and digital systems. The future workforce is also going to have to be more agile, able to work on renewable energy sources and digital technologies that are transforming the sector at a rate it has never before seen, said Branigan.Failing to address this critical demand for workers runs the risk that Canada’s power systems will become less reliable, she said.“If you don’t have the right people in the right place at the right time, with the right skills, that’s where we could run into difficulty,” she said. The report notes a number of electricity-sector jobs demand similar skills as other industries — engineers, cybersecurity experts, information and communication technology specialists, to name a few — and electricity companies have to compete with flashier and more popular companies for the same workers. Many young people know little about the provincial utilities that generate and transmit much of Canada’s electricity, Branigan said.“But do you know Google, do you know Shopify, do you know these types of organizations? Yes, you do. Those resonate with young people. Where are they going to think about when they start thinking about an industry that is sexy and cool and is going to be exciting for them?”Nirav Patel, the director of human resources at Ontario Power Generation, said promoting the skilled trades as options for young people, and marketing the industry to kids as young as elementary-school levels, could help attract them.Patel also said while the industry is changing, there is one thing electricity can offer that some other industries cannot: security.“The jobs are going to be around for a long time,” he said.Branigan also warned employers not to focus on the big physical need to refurbish and modernize electricity grids, at the expense of the workforce that runs them.“At the end of the day we need the people to keep the power on,” she said.Mia Rabson, The Canadian Presslast_img read more

Ban and senior Serbian official discuss Kosovo at UN Headquarters

29 July 2010Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the Foreign Minister of Serbia, Vuk Jeremic, met today at United Nations Headquarters in New York, where they discussed questions related to Kosovo as well as a planned high-level meeting on disarmament. The meeting comes one week after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) released its advisory opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia in February 2008, which Belgrade rejects. By 10 votes to four, judges at the ICJ concluded that the declaration does not breach either general international law, a Security Council resolution from 1999 following the end of fighting in Kosovo, or the constitutional framework that was adopted by the Secretary-General’s Special Representative on behalf of the UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK). UNMIK was established after Western forces drove out Yugoslav forces amid inter-ethnic fighting in 1999. Ethnic Albanians outnumber ethnic Serbs and other minorities by about nine to one in Kosovo. The Secretary-General said today that he planned to closely coordinate next steps with the European Union (EU), which has offered to facilitate a process of dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade. He and Mr. Jeremic also discussed a Serbian draft General Assembly resolution on this subject, according to information provided by the Secretary-General’s spokesperson. Mr. Ban said he continued to appeal to all sides to support constructive dialogue and the settlement of all remaining concerns, while encouraging political stability and discouraging provocations. During their talks, the Secretary-General also said he hoped the Foreign Minister will attend the high-level session of the Conference on Disarmament that he will be convening in New York on 24 September. read more

Calgary hotel market too much supply not enough demand CBRE

The new hotels, for the most part, are found in the northeast near the airport, but the Marriott Residence Inn on 10 Avenue in the Beltline was also recently completed.Kwong believes it’s ill-advised to start a hotel construction project, especially in the northeast unless you can take advantage of potentially lower construction costs and if you’re looking at select properties that fill a niche.“I think there still is a need for some hotel rooms in Calgary.” CALGARY (660 NEWS) — An influx of hotel developments in Calgary has led to an oversupply in the market.A commercial real estate firm says there’s been a 15 to 18 per cent increase in the number of hotel rooms in Calgary in the last two to three years. As Greg Kwong, Regional Managing Director for CBRE Limited explains, many projects were started when the city was doing better economically.“Currently as demand is a little bit slow it’s a little bit tough right now,” said Kwong. “But with any hotel development, you’re not building just for the short term, you’re obviously looking to the long term.”Kwong says projects like the expansion of the BMO Centre on the Calgary Stampede grounds should still go ahead as the hotel market is expected to improve over time.“So in anticipation of that and a number of other, hopefully, better opportunities for attracting guests to Calgary, I think the hotel market is well-positioned.”WATCH: BMO Centre expansion underway read more

Crackdown on mobile phones at the wheel has cut number offences by

first_imgIt received responses from 41. March saw the most FPNs issued for mobile use in 2017 as many forces conducted a crackdown on distracted drivers, with more than 8,500 caught. The lowest monthly total was 1,400 in December as police focused their efforts on drink-drivers over the festive period.AA president Edmund King said: “It will take time for a wholesale change in attitudes to really take effect.”While some have got the message and changed their behaviour, many drivers still believe they won’t get caught.”Separate RAC research found that nearly one in five (19 per cent) firms say their employees have been involved in an accident after using a phone illegally while driving for work.A survey of 1,000 UK businesses revealed that 5 per cent admit this happens “on a regular basis”. Department for Transport figures show 780 people were injured in accidents in 2016 when a driver was distracted or impaired by their phone, up 10 per cent on the previous year.  A crackdown on mobile phone use at the wheel has cut the number of offences by half, new figures show. Around 39,000 fixed penalty notices (FPNs) were issued to drivers between March and December last year compared with 74,000 during the same period in 2016, according to police data. The 47 per cent decline is due to a combination of harsher punishments, road safety campaigns and a lack of enforcement due to reductions in traffic officer numbers, according to the AA.Since March 1 last year, motorists caught using a handheld phone have faced receiving six points on their licence and a £200 fine – up from the previous penalty of three points and £100.Drivers can lose their licence if they receive 12 points within three years, or six points in the first two years after passing their test. The figures were obtained by the breakdown rescue firm after it submitted Freedom of Information requests to all of the UK’s 45 police forces. Children and passersby put at risk by Russian nerve agent hit squad

first_imgThere are now fears several other people may have had access to the front door before the house was sealed off by police on the Monday afternoon, the day following the attack, after they realised they were dealing with a chemical weapon.Tom Symons, a BBC news reporter who was among the first media to arrive at the house, wrote on Twitter: “Myself and two BBC colleagues were first reporters at Sergei Skripal’s door on Monday afternoon.  No cordon, just a police car.“Thankfully I decided not to knock but I did ask the officer sitting in the car if there were any health risks I should be aware of. Didn’t get answer!”It is feared the method used by the suspected Russian hit-squad to target Col Skripal gave the would-be assassins the opportunity to flee the country within hours of launching the attack.By smearing the front door with nerve agent any time from the Saturday night onwards they would have had enough time to travel to Heathrow or Gatwick Airports and fly out of Britain before the Skripals collapsed after succumbing to the poison.Former counter terrorism officer David Videcette, who investigating the 7/7 London bombings, said: “If the assumption that someone has put something on the front door is right, and it’s not cross contamination, there is a way for someone to escape without being seen down an alleyway along the side of the house that doesn’t appear to be covered by CCTV.” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Police in chemical protection suits examine the bench where the Skripals collapsed following the nerve agent attack in SalisburyCredit:Ben Stansall/AFP Counter-terrorism police revealed for the first time that they believed the pair “first came into contact” with the Novichok nerve agent at their home in Christie Miller Road.Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey, who was hospitalised for several days after falling sick, is thought to have become ill after going to the house directly from the spot where Col Skripal and Yulia collapsed near the Maltings shopping centre at around 4.15pm on Sunday, March 4.Scotland Yard said: “As a result of detailed forensic and scientific examination, detectives believe the Skripals first came into contact with the nerve agent at their home address. Specialists have identified the highest concentration of the nerve agent, to-date, as being on the front door of the address.” The hit squad which targeted former Russian spy Sergei Skripal put dozens of innocent bystanders – including children – at risk by placing nerve agent on the front door of his home close to a children’s playground, it has emerged.NHS officials are understood to be monitoring several people for signs of health problems after coming into potential contact with the Novichok agent. They are thought to include neighbours, postal staff, the first uniformed officers to arrive at the scene and even reporters who approached the house after news of the attack broke and before it was properly sealed off by counter terrorism police.Yesterday afternoon police began to search a children’s play area just yards the Skripal’s Salisbury home, suggesting they fear it may contain traces of nerve agent – either from the Skripals themselves or by the would-be assassins leaving a trail as they made their escape.Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dean Haydon said: “I would like to reassure residents that we have placed the cordons around the park, and officers will be searching it, as a precautionary measure. I would like to reiterate Public Health England’s advice that the risk to the public is low.”Police disclosed on Thursday night that the “highest concentration” of the nerve agent which poisoned Colonel Skripal and his daughter Yulia was found on his front door.center_img Police in chemical protection suits examine the bench where the Skripals collapsed following the nerve agent attack in Salisbury Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former head of the military’s Joint Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Regiment, said the application of the nerve agent could only have been done by well trained operatives. He said the would-be assassins had probably hoped the nerve agent would never be identified and the delayed effect would have meant they would be long gone anyway. He said: “There are probably one or two people involved in putting it there. Novichok agents have the ability to delay their reaction. They were hoping to be well gone before anything was discovered and they were hoping that they would get away Scot free because we wouldn’t identify it.”The suspects are also likely to have used careful planning and tradecraft to cover their tracks. He said: “Once again it points towards the FSB [successor to the KGB].” Traces of the nerve agent have been found at some of the other scenes detectives have been working at over the past few weeks – including Zizzi’s restaurant and The Mill pub visited by the pair –  but at lower concentrations to those found at Christie Miller Road.At a public meeting two weeks ago Paul Mills, deputy chief Constable of Wiltshire police, revealed 131 people could have potentially come into contact with the deadly nerve agent, and that they were being monitored by health authorities over the phone on a daily basis.last_img read more

Me and Liz Carmouche, it felt bigger to me. Even though it was years ago and not as many people watched and it was in the Honda Center, which maybe holds like 16 to 20 thousand compared to WrestleMania, where it was in front of like 80,000 people and millions of people watching.“I just felt like me and Carmouche was the most pivotal moment, where everything had to happen that way or else women’s MMA would have ended before it started. The group of employers that publish this information includes real estate organisation Rightmove, the Royal Bank of Scotland and water utility Severn Trent.A corresponding survey, conducted by Mumsnet in February 2019, found that 82% of parents and prospective parents are reluctant to ask potential employers about parental leave arrangements because it might impact the likelihood of receiving a job offer. However, 84% of those surveyed stated that knowing about these policies is important when applying for a new job.The 23 organisations that publish details about their parental leave policies, in alphabetical order, are:AdmiralAvivaBHPBPBritish American TobaccoBTCroda InternationalDiageoDirect LineExperianJohnson MattheyReckitt BenckiserRio TintoRightmoveRolls-RoyceRoyal Bank of ScotlandRoyal Dutch ShellScottish Mortgage Investment TrustSevern TrentSSEStandard CharteredUnileverVodafoneJustine Roberts, founder at Mumsnet, said: “This information is unbelievably significant for parents; people need transparency so that they can make informed decisions, and it’s baffling that so many [organisations] make it so difficult to find, given that it significantly affects people’s lives.“If more [organisations] were to publish their policies, it could well encourage a race to the top and would certainly reward employers [that] do the right thing. Conference Agreement Adds Funds for BRAC Cleanup Other Priorities

first_imgFunding for cleanup and ongoing operations and maintenance at installations closed during past base closure rounds would jump $32 million from current year spending to $342 million next year, under the conference agreement for the fiscal 2019 military construction-Veterans Affairs spending bill released Monday. The compromise allocation represents a $74.5 million increase over the administration’s budget request, which conferees said should be used to accelerate remediation at closed bases. The conference report directs $60.5 million of the additional funds to go toward cleaning up Navy BRAC sites. It directs $14 million to be spent on identifying, mitigating and cleaning up PFOA and PFOS, two contaminants found in the drinking water supplies used by a number of BRAC communities. The Navy and DOD need to submit a spending plan for the extra funds within 30 days after the spending measure, part of a three-bill minibus, is enacted, the report says. The conferees also highlighted the need for “the department to dedicate funds to demolish BRAC facilities and turn the land over to the local community as quickly as possible,” and noted they are concerned DOD does not have “an adequate plan” for demolishing BRAC sites. They cited the example of Ontario Air National Guard Station, which was shuttered in 1997 and now is home to Ontario International Airport. “Yet the old site has sat largely unchanged for 20 years due to the environmental hazards of demolition,” they stated.Army photo by Cpl. Walking Dead Jimmy Kimmel hit with 500K fines for using prohibited alarm

first_img FCC,I’m shocked — shocked! — to learn that stores are turning Labor Day into an excuse to sell stuff. Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.The 2019 Vizio P Series Quantum is back under $999.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. Google Express is having a big sale as well, one that includes deals on game consoles, AirPods, iPhones, laptops and more.Below I’ve rounded up a handful of individual items I consider to be the cream of the crop, followed by a handy reference guide to other Labor Day sales. Keep in mind, of course, that products may sell out at any time, even if the sale itself is still running. Note that CNET may get a share of revenue from the sale of the products featured on this page. AMC ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live and AMC’s Walking Dead have had to pay half a million dollars in fines between them for broadcasting prohibited emergency tones. The FCC prohibits the broadcasting of Emergency Alert System or Wireless Emergency Alert tones, or simulations of them, except “during actual emergencies, authorized tests or authorized public service announcements,” the FCC said.A skit aired on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live on Oct. 3, 2018 used a simulated WEA tone three times, the FCC says in a release on its site, adding that ABC transmitted the episode nationwide to 250 TV stations. ABC agreed to pay a $395,000 civil penalty and committed to a compliance plan. During the Omega episode of The Walking Dead in February 2019, EAS tones sounded and were then transmitted on “eight separate instances across cable and satellite systems nationwide.” The FCC says AMC admitted to the violation, agreed to pay a $104,000 civil penalty and also committed to a compliance plan.Unluckiest of all was Animal Planet’s Lone Star Law, which managed to capture a WEA received by phones during its Hurricane Harvey episode. Discovery, the channel’s owner, agreed to pay a $68,000 civil penalty.Other broadcasters that have been found to have misused the warning tones include Los Angeles-area radio stations KDAY and KDEY-FM. 3DS game cases to be slimmer DSi power cables compatible

first_imgThe guys over at Andriasang have dug up a load of new information relating to the 3DS hardware from Nintendo’s official Japanese 3DS site. Unlike the recent bad news about the battery life and region locking of the games, there’s actually some good news here. For the collectors among you who are running short of shelf space, you’ll be pleased to hear that Nintendo has decided to make 3DS cases slimmer. We don’t know how slim exactly, but they won’t be as fat as DS cases are. However, DS case size varies per territory, so we’re not sure if they are going to be slimmer than all DS cases or just a certain territories e.g. Japan. The second bit of good news is that DSi and DSi XL AC adapters are compatible with the 3DS. So if you own a DS you automatically have a backup or second adapter to carry around for charging. As for the cartridges, the 3DS cartridge casing has a small extra section of plastic on the top right to differentiate it as seen in this comparison image:Other information of note is the fact that 3DS games have a higher resolution than DS games when not using 3D to view them. Those expecting DS games to look better on the 3DS will be disappointed as no upscaling is going to be available, they will look that same as on a DS. There’s also no chance the 3D effect will be used with DS games.Unlike the DS, the 3DS can perform data transfers when in sleep mode allowing for StreetPass to always be on and keeping up-to-date. The data transfer speed is also surprisingly good with up to 12 games capable of being transferred at the same time. Finally, the 3DS has the ability to multitask. So you can be playing a game, pause it and bring up the Home menu, and start surfing the Internet, or access your apps like the Memo pad. When done, you can instantly return to the game.Read more at Andriasanglast_img read more

Sen Josh Hawleys New Bill Aims To Make Autoplay Videos Endless Scrolling

It has the same kind of addictive qualities that keep people in Las Vegas hooked. Other examples are removing stopping cues. So if I take the bottom out of this glass and I keep refilling the water or the wine, you won’t know when to stop drinking. That’s what happens with infinitely scrolling feeds.”Hawley agrees with the assessment, pointing out that the technology industry is embracing a business model that relies on addiction.”Too much of the ‘innovation’ in this space is designed not to create better products, but to capture more attention by using psychological tricks that make it difficult to look away,” Hawley said in a report from The Verge. The Darker Side Of The BillIn a piece on Reason, Peter Suderman pointed out that empowering federal agencies to regulate every detail of social media companies seems to be “a wild misuse of federal power.” It’s easy to imagine, he explained, agencies or individuals abusing this bill to punish, reward, and generally control companies.Ultimately, critics are noting that the SMART Act is too controlling, treating Internet users with kid gloves. Instead of trusting individuals to regulate themselves online and on social media, the bill operates with the belief that the government or legislation needs to step in. Josh Hawley is proposing a bill to solve it. The SMART Act will ban many of the addictive features of websites.   ( Pixabay ) Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri introduces a new bill that will make autoplay videos and endless scrolling features on websites and social media illegal. The SMART ActThe bill, called the Social Media Addiction Reduction Technology Act or SMART Act, aims to ban addictive features that are working to keep people online longer. If it gains approval, the Federal Trade Commission and Health and Human Services could put together similar regulations. These would expire within three years if the Congress does not it a law.The SMART Act is targeting social media, banning many features that are common in websites, such as infinite scrolling, awards with no benefits except rewarding website engagement, and autoplaying or automatic loading of certain content.
